A group of 5th graders from Ohio successfully raised $17,000 dollars for the construction of a deep well and water tower at a school in the Democratic Republic of Congo. They presented the check to Emmanuel Cibasu on behalf of DR Congoaid International. Work on the water system is already beginning.

The 5th graders originally became aware of the need for clean water sources in certain African countries when their teacher, Mrs. Johns, brought in a book describing the difficulties faced by one Sudanese girl to obtain water. It required her to walk 8 hours, missing school, just to bring home a bucket of dirty water. The children did some research to find out if the story was true. They learned that not only was it true for many children in Sudan, it was also true for untold numbers of other African children. They immediately sprung into action.
With the help of Mrs. Johns and other members of their community, the children launched their "Coins for Congo" campaign, the goal of which was to raise the $15,000 needed to provide clean, running water for a school in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Over the course of several months, they travelled the northwest Ohio region, reaching out to charitable organizations to raise awareness of the problem and solicit donations. They educated their fellow students and even teachers. By early October, they had hit their goal.

Many people throughout DR Congo live without access to clean water and must travel miles just to find a dirty water source. DR Congoaid is working to alleviate this problem bit by bit, starting with one school near Kinshasa.
