One of our primary goals is to provide clean water to Congolese school children. In many places throughout Congo, the only water sources are small wells or streams with stagnant, dirty water. Lack of access to clean water has a domino effect on the economic situation of those who consume it. It can lead to a wide array of debilitating and deadly diseases such cholera, diphtheria, dysentery, and ringworm. Those diseases that don’t kill the victim severely weaken them, making them unable to go to work, attend school or care for their families for various periods of time. When you are already desperately poor, this can be devastating.
In order to alleviate the problem of dirty water, our first medium-scale project is to install a source of reliable, clean water for Complexe Scolaire le Paradis, a school in N’sele, Kinshasa. This will not only dramatically improve the health of the students, but will also allow them to spend more time focusing on learning. As you can see, their methods of collecting and extracting water can be quite time consuming. A more modern water extraction and storage system will allow them to quickly hydrate.
The picture below is an example of the system we will be installing, with your help. It begins with a well drilled deep enough to avoid groundwater pollution and to resist seasonal droughts. A diesel generator will power a pump that feeds a water tower, which stores the water and provides enough water pressure to be used for a variety of purposes.
