The Orphans of DR Congo

Writer's picture: DR Congaid StaffDR Congaid Staff

The conflict in DR Congo has left many children without parents, on top of being destitute. Charitable people in the country are doing their best to take care of some of these orphans, but there just isn’t enough to go around. One such orphanage is Le Bon Samaritan in the province of Equateur. Supporting Le Bon Samaritan is one of our primary objectives at the moment.

Jack and Jams

To get an idea of what some of these children have been through, consider the case of Jack and Jams, two of the children who reside at Le Bon Samaritan. The staff at the orphanage don’t even know their given names, because of their age at the time they were found.

Jack and Jams were found along the Congo River during clashes between the Congolese Army and the “Enyele” Rebels in Equateur province in DR Congo in 2016. Because of the trauma they have experienced, they speak very little. However, over time their caretakers learned that their families were fleeing confrontations between the Congolese Army and rebels from the Village of Malange in the district of Mongala. Their intended destination was Mbandaka, in the capital of the province of Equateur. During their journey, they encountered very heavy gunfire. Everyone dispersed, and the parents of these two little boys were shot and killed. Jack and Jams, along with the other survivors, boarded a small wooden boat which trades between the villages of Equateur Province and Mbandaka. This is how they found themselves abandoned on the banks of the Congo River, where the boat that transported them docked. Jack and Jams didn’t know where to go. Fortunately, a man from a neighboring village named Molende Eenge, who was himself very poor, took pity on them and decided to take care of them as best as he could. Molende found it difficult to cover their basic needs, and asked for help here and there to support these innocent orphans and victims of injustice, but without much success. Today, Jack and Jams live in straw huts, exposed to all forms of bad weather, poor nutrition, diseases, and have no way of going to school. They, along with many other children at Bon Samaritan orphanage, are waiting for compassionate people, like yourself, to provide for them.
